What do you see? Do you see a promo for a horror film or a family comedy?

The footage is the same. Footage from a horror film now voices itself as a comedy. How did this happen? How is it that the same facial expressions have one meaning in one context and yet another meaning when placed in a new context? Did the facial expressions and voice tones change? Or did our perception of them change?

Obviously, our perception of the exact same video footage changed. What made our perceptions change? The music? Editing? Voice over? Or was it something else?

I'd argue it's not just one thing. The video editor of this trailor has a keen sense of visual communication--this is certain. He either picked a movie with heavy father-son images or he picked this movie and choose the father-son theme. But probably his main goal was to twist the viewer's cemented perceptions of "murder and mayhem" and plug in the opposite emotions, love and happiness, just to prove to us that it could be done and done well. This mind bending twist on our preset knowledge is what underlies the success of this trailor, and in my opinion makes it a triumphant video remix.

After picking a story that will provide the most dynamic twist, the editor then set about cementing the new emotions with careful cherry-picking of the movie's scenes. He chose a music track that's conducive to a family comedy. He then set about writing the narration while editing at the same time because it's obvious that the narrative plays off the images and vice-versa.

My hat is off to this video's editor, and really, the video's creator, Rob R. It's obvious he loves editing, has an intuitive grasp of visual communication, and spent a lot of time making a video that's only payoff is a shared enjoyment with others.

NOTE: The editor's name is Rob R. and he is located at www.ps260.com with a video blog at http://ps260.blogspot.com/ I highly recommend spending some time watching their video blog -- excellent, excellent, excellent stuff! And he gave me permission to share his video with you! Thanks Rob!
